New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) was created in 1976 to address the unmet legal needs of disadvantaged New Yorkers. NYLPI finds unique ways to tackle the problems faced by underrepresented people throughout New York City using two complementary approaches: a pro bono clearinghouse and an in-house legal and advocacy program.
The Pro Bono Clearinghouse provides community groups and nonprofit organizations with free legal assistance on a wide range of issues by drawing on hundreds of lawyers from New York’s most prestigious law firms and corporate legal departments.
The Disability Law Center assists people with disabilities so they may participate fully in all aspects of American life.
The Health Justice Program works to ensure access to quality health care for people with low income and communities of color.
The Environmental Justice and Community Development Project provides legal assistance to environmentally overburdened low-income communities and communities of color as they strive to transform their neighborhoods.
